To all Pilots of Houston Sport Flyers,

Lately I have had some concern that many of your may not feel included in this club for a number of different reasons. One of which is that you may not feel included in a particular group. Rest assured that each and every one of you shares equally in this club as members whether you have been a member for 5 years or just one day. One of the great things about this club is that we have a diversity of pilots from many varieties and focus within the R/C fields i.e., pattern, IMAC, pylon, scale, scratch building, etc., but no R/C discipline or group is preferred or more important than the other. Having said this, I urge you to participate in activities that we plan in order to enjoy your membership and get to know other members. Most can provide a vast wealth of knowledge that you will find is eagerly shared. This is one of the nicest group of pilots you will ever meet. If anyone has any special needs, requires any help, or is interested in a particular R/C field and might be afraid to ask, please either see me personally at the field or e-mail me. If for some reason I cannot help you, I will diligently work to put you in touch with someone who will. This club will only be as good as we want it to be. This is a Club and though it sounds trite, we as members will only get out of it what we put into it. Personally, I would like it to be one of the best and I am positive that you share in that vision.

Hello Pilots,

I am happy to report that the weather cooperated and the field workday was a total success. The runway has been repositioned and so have the pilot stations and safety fence accordingly. I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who came out and lended a hand. My special gratitude  goes out to Mike Funk for speading the dirt in front of the shelter area, mowing the new runway, and keeping everyone focused on the job at hand. Your gracious enthusiasm for this club and hobby are without question a  tremendous asset to our club.  My appreciation to Mark Conroy who helped us get the fence repositioned with a Gitr' done attitude, and somehow turned a chore into fun. Thanks to Steve Minter for running the roller around behind his truck without getting dizzy.  All objectives were met with the exception of dragging the field with fence material. Apparently the fence has been "borrowed".  So, if you have an old chain link fence lying around that you no longer need, please bring it to the next club meeting. We can put it to good use! As a reminder, our next monthly meeting wiil be held this coming Saturday March 11 at 10:00a.m. rain or shine.  Please make plans to attend. I will e-mail an agenda this week.

Straight down the runway,

To all Pilots of Houston Sport Flyers,

Let me begin by saying that it is an honor and a privilege to be chosen as your club president for the 2006-2007 term. The previous gentlemen that have held this office have done a fine job in the past and have raised the bar on what is to be expected of their successors. It will be tough for me to fill their shoes, but I will do my very best to be what you have come to expect from a club president.

As you are probably aware, we will face some difficult tasks and adversity this year, but none that can’t be overcome. In fact, I view this as an inconvenience and something that will only draw this club closer and stronger. A club president and its officers can only be as good as its membership and we are fortunate to have a one of quality, diversity, and character that other clubs envy. You folks demonstrate that a club is as good as what you put into it.

Our present flying field location will more than likely be relocated within the same Harris county flood control area this year. Instead of being discouraged by this, I perceive it as an opportunity to improve on what we currently have as our founder Dick Shively surely would have. Once this new site has been determined, I encourage you to get involved, volunteer and submit your input to the field relocation committee to be headed by Mark Conroy. Perhaps you think your help is not of any value, but trust me it is. I would like to press forward with this as soon as possible so that we can continue to utilize and fly at our current field while setting up our new “R/C Airport”. Where and If at all possible, I would like to take advantage of your occupational disciplines/expertise so that costs may be kept to a minimum to the club. Having said that, if the costs of moving will allow it, perhaps in the future we can procure a mowing/trash removal contract as it is difficult to maintain with members work schedules etc.

A few members have already suggested and I agree that we should hold more flying events to be held at our field. Some events are already set and some are additional. These will have to be coordinated with our subsequent relocation. With additional events, perhaps its time to retire our current frequency control board and replace it with something new and improved. The quality of our starting stands are proof positive our club has talent along with flying skills.  Again I would be open to any additional input.
