First Annual Toys for Tots Fun Fly - 2003

Marine excepts and Thanks Mark Hunt for setting up this great event. The first annual Houston Sport Flyers Toys for Tots R/C fly-in was held at Dick Shively field, located on Kuykendahl road, on Saturday, Nov. 15th. We hosted approximately 30 R/C pilots and many, many spectators and guests who graciously donated nearly 100 new toys and over $200 in cash to support the local Houston area Toys for Tots. Many thanks to the local hobby stores, but especially to Larry's Hobby shop for donating many great door prizes for the event. Helicopter pilot, Jesse Lacari and Giant Scale Aerobatics pilot, Jason Danhakl, helped fill the day with some spectacular R/C flying demonstrations. The Houston Sport Flyers would also like to thank Harris County, Pct. 4 Parks Director, Joe Turner for helping us acquire such a beautiful flying site.

July 12th 2003 - Cap Cadets Fly-in

The Cadet Fly-in was a great success! Each Cadet had a turn or two flying the RC planes. They all did very well. This was part of their training before thay can fly the RC aircraft they will be building.

Also the president of Web-1 hosting, Jim Grill and his son Greyson, also took turns flying the rc planes. They had such a good time that later that afternoon, Jim called me and said he had to have one of his own! I turned him on to the Hobby Zone Aerobird. They went out and bought the plane and Jim and Greyson have since been enjoying their new little electric plane.

It is a joy to see the spark in someones eye once they are introduced to the RC hobby!

Jetero Pattern meet on June 7-8 2003 in Huffman

Mark and I went and entered the competition in Huffman. With this being my first competition, I entered into the sportsman class. I was rather nervous but excited as well. I had engine trouble for most of my rounds, which didn't help my points. My fling skills as well were not as sharp as they needed to be. With this being said, I didn't take home a trophy, but I did win. I won a great experience and a great time. I learned allot about pattern fling and what the judges are looking for. I encourage all pilots to give pattern a try at least once… you just might like it.

May 3-4th 2003 - Bryan/College Station IMAC challenge

Club Members Mark Hunt, Sean Rushing, & Richard Lewis went to take the IMAC Challenge and I (Steve Minter) went to spectate and assist our club members. Our members entered into the Basic Sequence class and completed round one. Into round two, Mark and Sean did fairly well, but Richard on the other hand, had a little miss-hap during his sequence and his Ultimate dropped to the ground, center stage! Ask Richard for details, I'm sure he'd love to tell ya all about it! Round three.... Both Mark and Sean improving every time, Mark completed his round and Sean's Extra, dead sticked during his first sequence. He saved it nicely, landed, restarted, and returned to complete his second sequence of round three. At the end of the day, our club members were in good standings. Day Two...... Only Mark returns to complete the IMAC challenge which resulted in second place in the basic sequence.

This was a great experience and I learned a bunch about pattern flying. I'm hooked. I was very impressed with our club members competing against much larger aircraft. It was very intimidating at first but the folks at Brazos Valley RC Club were very polite and gave everyone great encouragement. I believe more of our Club members should come out to the next IMAC challenge. Either fly or spectate, equally it will be a great experience for anyone!

Junk Yard Wars

Saturday March 29, 2003

Well to make a long story short......There is a club in central texas that has devised some sort of JUNKYARD WARS for model airplanes.....

This is the basic concept.

  • 4hrs max to build a plane from junk.
  • Teams must consist of 4 members
  • You can only bring a bushing .40 size (no OS fx series, or supertigers, or mds)
  • You need to bring all of your own radio stuff. (tx, rx, batt, switch and usually around 4-5 standard servo's)
  • They provide the big tools (belt sander, drill press, Hot wire foam cutter, table saw, scroll saw etc etc .....you need to bring your own hand tools. (dremel, exactos, screwdrivers, epoxy, ca etc...)
  • They provide all of the materials to build the plane......(like huge chlorplast signs, some 1/4" spar, landing gear, pvc downspout (good fuselage but heavy) etc, etc,
  • This is what they do...in the middle of the field they get like 2 HUGE BOXES.... like refrigerator boxes .......place all the stuff in the two boxes...... and 1 member from each team is allowed to run out to the boxes and grab 1 ITEM at a time.... until you are tired or all the stuff is gone. Then this year he threw a monkey wrench at us....and said THIS YEAR GUYS what ever you build it will have to be a PUSHER. As they were handing out 10x6 pusher props....

Now once finished and everyone's plane that did fly must go through some aerobatics.... 1st this year was...."HOW MANY FLIPS CAN IT DO IN 15 sec's" (winner was 4) 2nd was.... 15 sec's to climb as high as possible and see how long it will float/glide Last was 4 passes.....high and low speed pass upwind....high and low speed pass downwind..

On the day of the event we had 20 mph winds gusting up to 30 mph......i just knew none of them would fly....... and to my surprise....they all flew...except ONE.....we had one guy put together a BIPE ... and lets just say the wind refused to let it travel upwind on the ground.

    Cub Scout Fly-in 2003

Click To Enlarge Message from the President:

Congratulations to all!!! Teamwork pays off big. The Cub Scout Fly In was a winner. To thank you each individually would take too much space. Feedback from cubs and parents alike was very positive, including one mother reporting that she was pleased to see how well we related to the children, I assured her that we too are just big kids at heart. This feedback reinforces the fundamental club philosophy of teamwork and remembering that each individual member makes an important contribution to the club as a whole. Again, Kudos to our club and all of the members who supported this event.

    Sincerely,

    Peter C. Muchmore
    Club President
