Pilots,
Our 5th annual Toys for Tots was a great success thanks to you. We had 47 registered pilots and collected $340.00 along with a pickup truck full of toys. I would like to thank our sponsors: Randy’s Hobbies, New Creations, Larry’s Hobbies, and The R/C Hobby Shop in Sugarland. Because of their generosity, we had a great number of pilot giveaways and almost every pilot went home with something. Additional gratitude goes to Mike Funk for is help in organizing every aspect of the event and prepping the field with the help of Martin Stohr; Billy Howard for taking care of the catering and “blue room” and serving hot dogs and refreshments; I also extend special thanks to my wife Susan and to Morgan Funk for their support in working the registration tables, raffle, event preparation, serving dogs and sodas and anything else that was needed. These girls wound up being drafted when we began to see the volume of pilots we were going to have. They were real troopers throughout the day. Rose Howard stepped up and procured more hot dogs when we ran out. As always, HSF saw to it that anyone who wanted a hot dog got one. I hope I did not forget to thank anyone, If I did, trust it was an oversight not an omission.
For those who could not come, you missed out on a lot of fun! Several demos where held including 3-D helicopter; the AMA Advanced pattern sequence; a helicopter “blade stop” auto rotation; a war-bird formation fly-by in observance of veterans-day weekend; pylon racing-whew do these things move! As far as Fun-Fly competitions go, our bomb drop was admittedly a “bomb” with no one hitting the target. Being a CD at a fun fly is still a little new to me, but I now know what to do next time. An unconventional “drag” race was a lot of fun thanks to Jon Athans and Martin Stohr for being such good sports. Everyone got a good laugh due to these guys having such a great sense of humor. We had other events planned with pilots signed up, but simply ran out of time, as I wanted to allow for some open flying also. We’ll just save them for next time.
In summary, I think all spectators left with a feeling of genuine hospitality that makes HSF so unique, and pilots pulled away with a feeling of accomplishment and pride belonging to a club that generates so much adhesion and teamwork to facilitate such an event as this. I was honored to be asked and enjoyed being the Contest Director. We are very lucky that we have pilots from varying disciplines within the R/C community who are happy to display their skills when called upon, and fortunate to have pilots with so much respect for the other types of model aviation. I was pleasantly surprised at the number and interest the helicopter pilots came and brought to the event. We may even see some additional members join up. This week I am going to file with the AMA for our next major event: Founder’s Day April 12, 2008. Mark your calendars!
